Meet Dr. J
Raised in Jersey City by a teen mother, Dr. Jhenai Chandler learned early that success is rarely achieved alone. Growing up in an under-resourced community, she was supported by educators, mentors, and community members who saw her potential and helped her navigate challenges along the way. As a first-generation college student, she had to figure out complex educational and social systems without a roadmap. She experienced academic setbacks, became a mother while earning her undergraduate degree, and often questioned whether she would reach her goals.
Today, Dr. Chandler is a nationally recognized higher education leader, researcher, and advocate with nearly two decades of experience advancing student success, educational equity, and institutional transformation. Her work is informed not only by her professional expertise but also by her lived experiences as a first-generation college graduate, former parenting student, and mother of a child with autism. Navigating autism has deepened her understanding of advocacy, resilience, and the importance of creating environments where every person feels valued, supported, and empowered to thrive.
Whether she is speaking about college access, student success, leadership, parenting, disability advocacy, or personal growth, Dr. Chandler brings a unique perspective that bridges research, policy, and real life. Her mission is simple: to help people navigate life’s transitions with confidence while creating pathways for others to succeed.
Dr. Chandler holds a PhD in Higher Education Policy from Florida State University, a Master of Science degree from Nova Southeastern University, a Bachelor of Science degree from Florida State University, and an Associate of Arts degree from Florida A&M University.
